Down With Webster & Far East Movement @ HMV

Last week, Toronto was celeb central, with different events happening throughout the city - building up that excitement for the 2012 MuchMusic Video Awards. On June 16, HMV on Queen Street held "The Ultimate Autograph Session" featuring visits from Down With Webster, Far East Movement, Karl Wolf, Alyssa Reid, and Carly Rae Jepsen. I stopped by the store for the first two signings of the day - Down With Webster & Far East Movement.

Check out my photos:

If you don't know who they are, here's one of their music videos for "She's Dope"

And for those of you who don't know these guys, here's one of my all-time favourite songs, "Like a G6"

Jane's Party @ NXNE 2012

When doing research leading up to the NXNE festival, you would think that it wouldn't be took difficult of a task...but going through the massively long list of artists and bands taking part in this year's event was quite the process. I'll admit, I didn't go through every single one on the list, but I did tackle a lot of it. And among the bands that stood out to me, I stumbled upon Jane's Party.

Based out of Toronto and made up of four band members, Tom Ionescu, Jeff Giles, Devon Richardson and Zach Sutton, this is their third time taking part in NXNE. After listening to some of their music on their website, I was really digging it. So I met up with Jeff, Devon and Tom at The Hyatt (the NXNE main hub for the week) and did a quick interview to see what they're all about.

They played multiple shows at this year's festival, at various venues throughout the city, from the Lavish & Squalor store on Queen Street to The Cameron House. Unfortunately I wasn't able to check out any of their sets, but I'm hoping to see them perform live another time this summer!

Q: How is this year going to be different from your past NXNE experiences?

Devon: Well we're talking to you, so that's a change.

Jeff: We have a record we're working on, we're actually going to be in the studio tomorrow to finish up some piano and percussion. Then we'll have that mixed and it will be out and about hopefully by the late fall. It's going to be our first rockin' honest pop record.

Devon: Our masterpiece.

Q: Being based in Toronto now, where do you guys stand in the city's indie music scene?

Devon: We're big fans. Since we've been together for three and a half years, we've gotten the chance to meet a lot of other bands and sort of mesh into the scene a little bit more. So I think in that sense, we have a lot more friends in bands now, and are able to go see more music. It's got a lot more of a communal vibe now. It's awesome.

Q: Do you guys have a favourite venue in Toronto?

Jeff: The Cameron House. There's a lot of great music coming out of the Cameron House right now.

Tom: Yeah, most nights we'd probably say the Cameron House, whether we're playing or just hanging out.

Devon: But I think for playing though, for actual sound, I'd probably say The Horseshoe.

Tom: But they're so close that you can check out The Horseshoe, then mosey on over to the Cameron House. It's great.

Q:  Is there a story behind the name of the band?

Devon: Nothing crazy I guess, take it as it is.

Q: Is there a Jane in your life?

Jeff: I think for everyone there's a Jane.

Devon: Yeah, everyone's got their own Jane. There's not too much but there's also a vast amount of influence so take what you want from it.

Q: Your EP came out this past October, so what have you been working on since?

Tom: This record. We decided to have the five songs we've written for the EP and have a brand new 14 tracks on top of that. So we're not really keeping anything from the past; that's been done, so now we've got 14 brand new songs that we're excited for.

Devon: That EP will now stand on its own as the Jane's Party EP and then we'll have the full LP that'll be brand-spankin' new music. But it's also consistent tunes we've been playing for the past two years but just haven't recorded, plus some new ones that we maybe just completed within the past month or so.

Jeff: Yeah, it's a nice mix of fresh off-the-board tunes that we didn't really even play together until the studio.

I'm definitely looking forward to hearing more from these guys! In the meantime, be sure to check out their website and keep an eye out for their full length album coming this fall.

Sidney York @ NXNE 2012

Right after seeing Gus + Scout on June 13th, I hopped on over to The Painted Lady out on Ossington to see one of my favourite West Coast bands, Sidney York. I met the three ladies, Brandi Sidoryk, Krista Wodelet, and Sheryl Reinhardt earlier this year at Canadian Music Week, so I was thrilled to get to see them perform live this time round.

I love how they bring their unique instruments (what other bands have an oboe and a bassoon?) together with their fun personalities to create a super energetic performance. And the venue for this show was really small, but it was nice to be so close and see them play for an intimate crowd - they definitely got everyone dancing, and it was a great party!

Also check out their music video for their song "Cold in Here" (one of my faves!)

Gus + Scout @ NXNE 2012

Hey everyone!

So the first show I checked out at NXNE this year was a performance by New York based band Gus + Scout, featuring Gus Wenner and Scout Willis. And yes, Scout is the daughter of Bruce Willis and Demi Moore, which I thought was pretty cool. Of course I was curious to see which path this Willis offspring decided to take - I'm sure you all remember Rumor Willis... - but I was pleasantly surprised by the band's set on June 13th. Gus & Scout were passionate performers and just seemed so cool and chill, while showcasing their musical skills. Gus was incredible on the guitar and you could tell he was putting his heart into it by the look on his face and Scout has such a powerful and smooth voice.

NXNE 2012

Hey everyone!

This week sure has been hectic, with tons of events throughout the city. To start off, the annual North by Northeast Festival and Conference (NXNE) kicked off on June 11 and went until the 17th - and during that time, I got to do a bunch of interviews, attend some great shows, and met a lot of awesome people. This is just a general NXNE blog post, but there's much more to come, including: interviews with A Friend in London, Jane's Party, the Rude Ass Gentlemen, and Masia One just to name a few, plus show photos from Gus & Scout, Sidney York, and Kovak. I even took a dancehall class...yeah, that happened. So stay tuned for my coverage, which will pop up slowly but surely (time to get caught up!)

Media Pass - love seeing 3F spreading the love!
NX Lounge Stage in The Hyatt

Dundas Square was constantly full of energy!

Power Ball: Quarter-Life Crisis

Hey everyone!

I was fortunate enough to join the iChannel team in attending this year's Power Ball - celebrating its 25th anniversary with a 'Quarter-Life Crisis' theme - which I've heard is one of the high-profile events, where anybody who is anybody will be there. And it definitely was a bumping party, full of fabulous food, drinks, art, music, and fashionable ladies and gents.

Toronto Fire Fighter Calendar Show

Hey everyone!

One thing I love about my job is that I get to go to such a wide range of events - one week I could be interviewing a musician at a concert and the next week I'd be taking photos of cute dogs...no complaining there! So last week, when I got asked to cover the Toronto Fire Fighter Calendar Show, how could I say no? Check out my post from the event on the iChannel blog:
