THEATRE | The Way We Get By

On my last day at my internship with NY1, I checked out a press preview of The Way We Get By, a new off-Broadway play starring Thomas Sadoski and Amanda Seyfried.

The story follows two main characters, Doug and Beth, after a drunken wedding reception. The awkwardness of "the morning after" right up on stage for your enjoyment, sounds pretty great doesn't it?

We even shared some laughs.

THEATRE | It Shoulda Been You Opening Night

It was a busy month of Broadway show openings for NY1 theater reporter Frank DiLella and I was happy that I got to go along to one of his shoots - the opening night of the comical wedding musical It Shoulda Been You.

I also went to the press preview for the show too, so I knew a lot more about it beforehand, but it was cool to be at the official opening night party at the beautiful Edison Ballroom. I helped out with some social media stuff at the event and experimented with Periscope, the new livestreaming app that's all the rage. (Neil Patrick Harris was in my first-ever Periscope livestream, nbd)

ON STAGE | The Visit

March 13th started off as any other day. Then I somehow ended up in the apartment of the consul general of Switzerland in New York (Ambassador André Schaller) and in the presence of Broadway legends Chita Rivera and Roger Rees, over breakfast I might add. I had the chance to tag along on a fun shoot with NY1 in celebration of The Visit coming to Broadway.

One of my favourite shoots so far with NY1 News has been the press preview for David Hare's play Skylight, starring Carey Mulligan, Bill Nighy and Matthew Beard. I interviewed the talented cast and director Stephen Daldry at The Golden Theatre about bringing the production to the Big Apple.

ON STAGE | Something Rotten!

A new musical comedy is coming to Broadway - Something Rotten! is heading to the St. James Theater this spring, with previews starting March 23rd and its official opening set for April 22nd.

Set in the 1590s, brothers Nick and Nigel Bottom are desperate to write a hit play but are stuck in the shadow of that Renaissance rockstar known as “The Bard.” When a local soothsayer foretells that the future of theater involves singing, dancing and acting at the same time, Nick and Nigel set out to write the world’s very first musical. But amidst the scandalous excitement of opening night, the Bottom Brothers realize that reaching the top means being true to thine own self...and all that jazz.

Another fun NY1 shoot: a preview of It Shoulda Been You, a new musical comedy coming to Broadway!

The show's all star cast includes Tyne Daly, Harriet Harris, Sierra Boggess and David Burtka.

NY1's theater reporter Frank Dilella interviewed the cast and we got to see a few scenes - it looks hilarious!

ON STAGE | The Trip To Bountiful

During my time here in New York, I obviously had to check out a Broadway show. From my previous trips to The Big Apple, I've seen The Lion King, The Little Mermaid and Promises, Promises. Last week, I had some free time so I headed over to the Times Square area to see what shows were playing. Then I remembered that Cuba Gooding Jr. was starring in one (I'm defs a fan). So I quickly made my way to the theatre and bought a ticket, super close to showtime. And to top it off, I got such a good deal with the student discount for a stellar seat (one that would have easily gone for $150, I was fourth row centre).

The Trip To Bountiful is a comedic drama about a woman whose only wish is to find her way back to her old, small and abandoned hometown. The play was written by Horton Foote and directed by Michael Wilson. It stars Cicely Tyson (The Help) as Carrie Watts, Cuba Gooding Jr. (haha is it weird that Snow Dogs is the first film that comes to mind?) as Ludie Watts and Vanessa Williams (Desperate Housewives) as Jessie Mae Watts.

I really loved the plot line and the casting of the characters. Cicely Tyson is so sassy, she's great.
And thank goodness I saw it when I did, because it was just announced that Cuba Gooding Jr will be replaced by Leon Addison Brown for the role of Ludie Watts starting August 27. If you get a chance, I definitely recommend this one!

Promises, Promises

Before I came back to BC for my winter break, I forgot to mention that I took a trip to New York! While I was over there, I was fortunate enough to see the Broadway musical "Promises, Promises" and I must say, it was fantastic.

After the show, my friend and I went to meet the actors, which included Sean Hayes (you may recognize him from Will and Grace!), Kristin Chenoweth, and Molly Shannon. It was freezing cold outside, but it was worth it. They were super nice and appreciative of their fans.
