TIFF Next Wave Film Festival Set Design Challenge

I posted my pre-TIFF Next Wave coverage HERE, but in addition to seeing a couple of the films featured at the festival, I also attended the Set Design Challenge on Saturday, May 12. It was such a cool event to see first-hand. Six Toronto teams were brought to the TIFF Bell Lightbox to create their own Hollywood backlot sets - each being given a different theme. Starting at 10am, the groups were provided with supplies in the form of everyday household objects and materials.

Working hard!
Here are the six final sets:

Theme: Inside a temple & had to incorporate 'mom' jeans
Theme: Inside a train - they chose to create a 'Granny Train'
Theme: Inside a jail cell
Theme: A website
Theme: A teenage girl's bedroom - they chose a Medieval angle
Theme: A skatepark
They used their imagination and creativity to impress the judges: Matthew Lillard (actor & director of Fat Kid Rules the World), Jacob Wysocki (star of Fat Kid Rules the World), MTV's Johnny Hockin, and director Sean Wainsteim.

So which set came out on top?

TIFF Next Wave Film Festival: May 10-12

Hey everyone!

I'm sure many of you have heard of TIFF, the Toronto International Film Festival, but for the first time ever, an event is being put on for the younger movie-loving generation. The TIFF Next Wave Film Festival features films geared towards - and even made by - youth, as well as workshops and panels for teens to gain insight into the movie-making industry. I will be covering some of the festivities for Faze Magazine, but was fortunate enough to get to see some advance screenings for some pre-festival coverage.

Check out my reviews for 17 Girls and Fat Kid Rules the World:

As well, the festival wouldn't have been made possible without the help of the TIFF Next Wave Committee. Check out this Q&A with one of it's members, grade 11 student, Emma Seligman:

On May 12, I'll be attending the TIFF Next Wave Set Design Challenge, which takes place all day at the TIFF Bell Lightbox. Looking forward to seeing some talented young filmmakers in progress!
