EVENT | Coral TV

Last week before heading off to New York, I was also able to check out a fantastic event hosted by Coral TV at the Beer Academy in Toronto for Faze Magazine. Coral is an online community for young, urban women to get advice and be entertained by energetic personalities on YouTube. I was able to meet some awesome ladies, do some fun demos and learn a few tips as well. If you haven't heard of Coral TV yet, be sure to check it out! Here's a quick glimpse:

They recently also just partnered with Kin Community, the leading multi-channel women's network on Youtube. Congrats!

Watsky & Dumbfoundead @ The Phoenix

Earlier this month, San Francisco rapper Watsky brought his Cardboard Castles Tour to Toronto. He played a sold-out show at The Phoenix Concert Theatre and I covered it for Faze Magazine.

After stumbling upon his YouTube channel and seeing his awesome music videos and listening to his catchy songs, I became a fan. Here's the video that went viral, launching him into YouTube stardom (24 million views!)

He combines humour and witty lyrics with sophisticated skills of spoken word. His latest album, Cardboard Castles, was just released last month - check out his video for "Moral of the Story" (he kicked off his show with this awesome track)

He also brought fellow Californian rapper Dumbfoundead, who's been his opening act along the tour. I didn't really know much of his stuff before, but he's such a dope performer. Here's one of his songs he included in his set: "New Chick"

COMEDY | OFF2KALI Presents New Video ft. Funny Canadians

Hey everyone!

Among the thousands of YouTube videos you sift through each and every day, you come across a ton of different personalities - and I have a friend who is hoping to stand out amongst the many faces on the web. As a colleague at a previous workplace (the super awesome Ryerson Digital Media Zone), I remember Richard Young telling me about his experiences as a budding actor and that he was working on some videos for his own YouTube channel. Since then, he got it up and running and I make sure to tune in - his channel is called Off2Kali.

His latest video, "Pick My Fake Indian Name" features some Canadian talent you may recognize: Ennis Esmer, Colin Mochrie, Paula Brancati and Peter Keleghan. They are all so awesome - kudos for getting them in the video!

His first video asked viewers to suggest Indian names - check it out:

Then he got these special guests to weigh-in and make the final decision:

My personal favourite was "Pahjahma Pahnz"........

TIFF 2012: Shit Girls Say

Although I never actually had time to go and see any of the fantastic movies at TIFF, I did however get to attend a Mavericks session at the TIFF Bell Lightbox. Through Twitter (oh how I love social media), I won an invite to the TIFF 12 Tweet Up on September 14th - an event for (hyper)active tweeters to meet and interact, face to face, rather than from behind a computer screen; and to mingle with the creators of the hilarious Twitter account and viral YouTube video series Shit Girls Say. We all got to hang out with Graydon Sheppard and Kyle Humphrey in the TIFF green room before their session in the theatre with George Stroumboulopoulos. BTW, did you know they're from Toronto? Another reason why Canada is awesome.

And then the discussion began!

 

They talked about everything from where the idea came from and what went into the making of the videos to how they handled the instant online stardom and even the release of their own book.

 

 Their book was launched this past Tuesday September 18 - get your copy now! We got to see some of the photos during the session and they are oh-so cute.
