MUSIC | Gov Ball 2015 Line Up Announced!

It's that time of year! The summer's biggest music festivals are starting to release the names of the artists/bands who will be hitting the stages. Since I'm obsessed with NYC, it's no surprise that one of my favourite festivals is The Governors Ball. This year it's happening on June 5-7 on Randall's Island, with headliners including Drake, The Black Keys and Deadmau5! Tickets go on sale Jan. 9th at 12pm EST.

INTERVIEW WITH: Alt-J

Photo via thisbonustrack.com
During my Governors Ball experience, I got to catch Alt-J's set, which I was super pumped about. I've been really digging their music and they just seem like all-around cool, chill guys. This has become one of my favourite songs on repeat:

Gwil, Gus, Joe and Thom came together during their university time in Leeds and have gained a worldwide fan base, traveling and performing for huge crowds. Their sound is so unique and I just can't get enough of it. 'An Awesome Wave' was the Mercury Prize winning album for 2012. Totally well-deserved!

I chatted with Gus Unger-Hamilton, keyboardist from the band and here's a quick little bit from the interview:

How was your Governors Ball experience?

We really enjoyed it.

What have you guys been up to since the release of your debut album, An Awesome Wave?

We’ve been touring for the past year and a half and we haven’t had very much time to make new material as a group because we’ve been touring as a group.

What’s it like working with each other?

It’s good. It’s only really been the four of us, no one has ever left or been replaced, so we have a really good click when we work together and make music. I think that’s the reason why we enjoy what we do so much because as much as it’s fun to play shows, creating music is the thing that really keeps us going. Whether it’s writing or recording, that’s more exciting I think.

Favourite part of being in the music industry?

The best thing about doing music for a living is that it’s an unusual job. You’re not tied to a schedule like other people and you can travel and enjoy a routine that’s uncommon. And that’s what’s really nice about it.

You guys went through a couple different band names, how did you land on Alt-J?

Alt-J was an idea at the time that we kind of all agreed on. We didn’t think about it, just sort of went for it.

Goals for 2013?

Wow, we’re already halfway through, this is crazy. I think we’d like to start a second album, that’d be a big goal for us.

Style Spotting @ The Governors Ball

Like at any summer music festival, fashion is always something to be noticed. And Governors Ball was no different. I think was probably even more challenging than usual because of the extreme weather conditions. Basically, you had to create an outfit that works with a pair of rubber boots.

There were tons of stylish people on Randall's Island for Gov, but I was only able to grab a few of them to snap some pics. Just thought I'd share! Maybe inspire you for future festivals to come?

Floral headbands were everywhere. At Governors Ball, they even had stations where you could DIY - the girl on the left made hers at this booth while her friend got neon face paint. True festival spirit!

 So many awesome sunglasses.

Fringe, denim, cropped tops, bangles, these three were spot-on with their festival attire.

INTERVIEW WITH: MS MR

I was introduced to the energetic and catchy musical stylings of MS MR during my research leading up to the Governors Ball and I'm so happy that they have found a place in my life.

I got to sit down with the New York-based duo and chat about their first Gov Ball experience and what went into the making of their debut album. I also saw their live set and they absolutely nailed it; I love their stage presence!

Lizzy & Max, MS MR

Have you guys been a part of Governors Ball before?

Max: We haven’t! This is both of our first Governors Ball as musicians, and as fans. Even though we are a New York band, we haven’t been here yet, so this is cool for us.

How did you prepare for this show?

Lizzy: We didn’t prepare too much. We used to be much more nervous about shows. I remember at the beginning, I would agonize all day about a show that night and be so anxious. Now that we’ve been doing it for about a year, it’s wonderful to feel this sense of calm and I think, honestly, that just makes for a better performance. I think the more relaxed and engaged and fun we’re having in a very real way, it translates into the performance. For us, we got here this morning and we’ve been super excited for the show all year since we found out about it. It’s our favourite line up of the summer and it’s awesome to play here in our home city. And so we got here and we’ve been drinking.

M: Started the day off with whisky Redbulls. Questionable mixing.

L: We have tons of friends from the city who are coming out today so it’ll be a great day for us to perform as artists but also a great day for us and all of our friends and it’s nice to do both those things. That won’t be the case at every festival, but because we’re home, it’s something a little bit special.

For people who haven’t heard your music yet, how would you describe it to them?

M: Our umbrella term is pop and we’re really proud that it’s pop music and not shy away from that at all. It’s dark, moody, atmospheric, it’s a mixed bag. But pop is definitely the key term.

Being from NYC, has the city influenced you and has it played a role into where you are today?

M: Absolutely.

L: In a huge way. We can’t overstate enough how important it is to us that we are both New York residents and that we made our music here and what a huge influence it’s had on the music. For us that means a variety of things. One, that we’ve been a part of this incredible music community and so many of our friends are artists and musicians or are on the business side of things. So we’ve been a part of this world for a while. I think people expect it to be a little bit more competitive between bands, but that’s really not the case. Especially in New York, which is really interesting given the nature of the city. But also, just the city itself. We recorded in Max’s bedroom closet and incorporated the sounds of the city into the music.

M: Along those lines, I think there’s something uniquely New York about the DIY way we made the record. You have to make albums in apartments and work with what you have and that was a big part of our recording process. We don’t have a studio, we just have a microphone and a keyboard so we’re just going to fucking do this and make it work. And I think that was uniquely New York.

L: I always write my best lyrics and melodies when I’m walking around and I’m definitely that weird person down the street singing into their phone. I don’t know what it is, maybe it’s something about being in motion, but now that I know I write that way, I should be walking around cities more. New York is hugely important to us, something we’re very proud of, which is why Governors Ball for us is such a special thing. It feels like a little bit of a homecoming and to be on this list of incredible list of artists playing. The fact that it’s our first year, our first record, that we’re on this line-up…it’s a huge deal for us.

We even matched — yay for florals!

Governors Ball 2013 | Day 3

I as honestly most excited for day 3 because I was able to focus more on the shows rather than running around doing media stuff. And because it was Kanye West day. He was the headliner for the closing night, so I was super pumped.

Here is what my day 3 looked like:

Steel Pulse

Portugal, The Man

Twin Shadow

Grizzly Bear

KANYE

Here's a video I took of Kanye's rant:

My biggest mistake though was staying right until the very end of Kanye's set, because I failed to realize that every other person on that island would be leaving at the exact same time...Getting home was THE worst.

Overall, I had a crazy, hectic, awesome Governors Ball experience!

Governors Ball 2013 | Day 2

Day 2 was seriously such a workout. Problems: a) The stages were set so far apart b) The media tent was in the worst spot c) The mud made everything so much harder.

Highlights: Meeting Lizzy & Max of MS MR (coolest, down-to-earth folks) and enjoying Kendrick Lamar live.

I felt bad for the people who had no idea about the amount of mud and showed up to the festival wearing cute shoes—especially white ones—and throughout the day, there were SO many ditched shoes everywhere. Thank goodness for my kid-sized $15 rubber boots.

I spent the entire day at the festival (hello tan!), so I was super exhausted by the end. I still managed to have a great time though! Check out my day 2 photos:

MS MR

If you haven't heard of their music yet, you're welcome:

 Paper Diamond

Kendrick Lamar (someone was holding a blow-up monkey and clearly got in my way the entire time...)

Day 3 coming up!
