Canadian Screen Awards 2013

The first-ever Canadian Screen Awards took place at the Sony Centre in downtown Toronto last Sunday. A friend and I decided to check it out, so we took advantage of the free tickets that were being offered. The show was hosted by Martin Short (who made a grand entrance by swinging in from the ceiling and singing to the audience) and it celebrated everything there is to do with Canadian film and television. It was televised on CBC.

Check out Martin Short's intro - he's great.

Some of the big winners of the night were:

Rebelle (English title: War Witch) - a Quebec film about African child soldiers - won 10 awards, including best film, best screenplay, best cinematography and the film's star Rachel Mwanza won best actress.

Stories We Tell (Sarah Polley) - won best documentary

Flashpoint - won best drama

Some other awards I was most interested in:

CBC's Dragons' Den beat out The Real Housewives of Vancouver for best reality series (Jody, Mary and Ronnie were in attendance and were also presenters!).

Peter Mansbridge was named best news anchor.

George Stroumboulopoulos won best variety host.

Meg Tilly won best dramatic actress for Global's wartime series Bomb Girls.

I even snapped a pic with Ronnie Negus of RHOV when we were leaving the theatre!
